Method 1: The Ignition Cycle Method (Most Common)
This is the most likely method to work.
1. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position (without starting the engine). The dash lights will illuminate.
2. Turn the ignition OFF.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 five to eight times. The exact number of cycles may vary.
4. Start the engine. The light should now be off. If not, try a few more cycles.
Method 2: Using the Trip Odometer Reset Button (Less Common)
Some Buicks use a button near the instrument cluster to reset trip odometers. Sometimes, this button can also reset the oil life system.
1. Locate the trip odometer reset button. This is usually a small button near the instrument cluster, often on the end of the stalk that controls the windshield wipers or turn signals.
2. With the ignition ON (but engine OFF), press and hold the trip odometer reset button. Hold it for several seconds. This will sometimes trigger the reset of the oil life system.
3. Start the engine and check if the light is off.
Method 3: Using a Scan Tool (If Other Methods Fail)
If neither of the above methods work, you might need a scan tool capable of communicating with your vehicle's onboard diagnostics (OBD-II). Many auto parts stores offer this service for free. A mechanic will be able to reset the oil life monitoring system using the tool.
Important Considerations:
* Actual Oil Change: Resetting the light doesn't replace actually changing your oil. Ignoring the light and not changing the oil can severely damage your engine. Follow your owner's manual's recommended oil change intervals (mileage or time, whichever comes first).
* Owner's Manual: Your owner's manual is the definitive guide for your specific vehicle. Consult it for the precise instructions on resetting the "Change Oil Soon" light.
If you're unsure about any of these steps, it's best to consult your owner's manual or take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
