Method 1: Push-On Knob (Most Common)
This is the simpler method. Most TJ automatic shift knobs are simply pushed onto a threaded shaft.
1. Shift into Park: Ensure the transmission is firmly in Park. This is crucial for safety.
2. Pull and Twist: Grip the shift knob firmly. While pulling straight up, try gently twisting it back and forth (clockwise and counter-clockwise). The combination of pulling and twisting usually breaks the friction holding it in place. Some require a more vigorous pull.
3. Removal: Once the knob is loose, pull it straight off the shift lever.
Method 2: Screw-On Knob (Less Common)
Some aftermarket or replacement knobs are screw-on.
1. Shift into Park: Again, ensure the transmission is in Park.
2. Locate the Retaining Ring or Nut: Inspect the base of the shift knob. There might be a small retaining ring or nut visible that needs to be unscrewed. You might need a small flathead screwdriver or pliers to help.
3. Unscrew and Remove: Once the retaining ring or nut is removed, the knob should simply pull or unscrew off the shifter.
If you encounter difficulties:
* Use a Shift Knob Puller: If you can't remove the knob by hand, consider using a shift knob puller tool. These tools are readily available online and at auto parts stores. They are designed to grip the knob without damaging it and provide the leverage needed for removal.
* Penetrating Lubricant: If the knob is stuck, try applying a penetrating lubricant (like WD-40) around the base of the knob and let it sit for a few minutes. This may help loosen any corrosion or grime.
* Be Gentle but Firm: Avoid using excessive force, as you could damage the shift lever or the knob itself.
Important Note: If you're unsure about any step, consult your owner's manual or a Jeep mechanic. Improper removal could potentially damage your vehicle's components.
