In general, a car manufacturer will require a specific disc brake piston tool to be used for repairs. From the manufacturer’s point of view this makes sense, as it locks the customer’s car into the dealership’s shop. However, given the number of similar tools available, this arrangement does not last for long, as independent shops soon find these tools and put them away so they can work on your model, as well as others in the same line. The manufacturer may try to indicate that not using the factory-backed tool will void the warranty, but given the number of independent shops out there, it is unlikely they will be able to enforce this.
