1. Gather Tools and Parts:
- Replacement belt tensioner
- Socket set
- Wrench set
- Pliers
- Safety goggles
- New serpentine belt (if needed)
2. Locate the Belt Tensioner:
- Open the hood of the Nitro and locate the belt tensioner. It's usually near the front of the engine, near the serpentine belt.
3. Relieve Belt Tension:
- Use a socket wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt, counterclockwise, to release tension on the serpentine belt.
4. Remove Serpentine Belt:
- Once the belt is loose, remove the serpentine belt from the pulleys.
5. Remove Tensioner Bolts:
- Use the wrench to loosen and remove the bolts holding the tensioner in place.
6. Remove Old Tensioner:
- Once the bolts are removed, you can take out the old tensioner.
7. Install New Tensioner:
- Place the new tensioner in position and reinstall the bolts. Tighten the bolts securely.
8. Reinstall Serpentine Belt:
- Route the serpentine belt back onto the pulleys, following the diagram in your vehicle's owner's manual.
9. Tension the Belt:
- Use the socket wrench to tighten the tensioner pulley bolt, clockwise, until the belt has the proper tension.
10. Double-Check:
- Ensure the belt is properly seated and tensioned. Start the engine briefly and observe the belt's operation. If it's running smoothly and without any unusual noises, you're good to go.
Remember, if you're not comfortable working on your vehicle's engine, it's best to consult a professional mechanic.
