1. Gather Tools and Parts:
- Replacement ignition switch (verify compatibility with your specific vehicle model).
- Socket wrench set (metric sizes).
- Small flat-head screwdriver or a trim removal tool.
- New key (optional, if changing keys as well).
2. Disconnect the Battery:
- Locate the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Use the appropriate wrench to loosen and remove the nut securing the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and set it aside. This will help prevent any electrical accidents while you work.
3. Remove Steering Column Cover:
- Turn the steering wheel to the "lock" position.
- Use the trim removal tool or flat-head screwdriver to pry open the cover around the ignition switch.
4. Disconnect Ignition Switch Wiring:
- Once the steering column cover is removed, you'll see the ignition switch assembly.
- Identify the electrical connectors attached to the ignition switch.
- Carefully disconnect these connectors by pressing the release tabs or squeezing the connectors' clips.
5. Remove Ignition Lock Cylinder:
- Insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it to the "ON" position.
- Use the small flat-head screwdriver to depress the release button or pinhole located near the ignition lock cylinder.
- While pressing the release button, turn the key to the "ACC" position and remove it.
- The ignition lock cylinder should now come out of the switch.
6. Remove the Ignition Switch:
- After the ignition lock cylinder is removed, you can proceed to remove the ignition switch itself.
- Locate the bolts or screws securing the ignition switch to the steering column.
- Use the appropriate socket wrench to loosen and remove these fasteners.
- Gently pull the ignition switch out from the steering column.
7. Install New Ignition Switch:
- Take the new ignition switch and carefully align it with the mounting holes on the steering column.
- Secure the new switch using the bolts or screws you removed earlier. Tighten them snugly.
8. Reconnect Wiring:
- Reconnect the electrical connectors that you disconnected earlier. Make sure they click securely into place.
9. Reinstall Ignition Lock Cylinder:
- Insert the ignition lock cylinder back into the switch, ensuring it's aligned properly.
- Turn the key to the "ON" position and then back to the "OFF" position.
- If the cylinder moves smoothly and engages properly, the installation is successful.
10. Reinstall Steering Column Cover:
- Replace the steering column cover and snap it into place.
11. Reconnect Battery:
- Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and secure it with the nut you removed earlier.
12. Test the Ignition Switch:
- Insert the key and turn the ignition to make sure it starts the vehicle properly.
13. Optional - Change the Key:
- If you have a new key, insert it into the ignition switch and turn it to the "ON" position.
- This action should disengage the old key and allow you to remove it.
- Now you can use the new key to start your vehicle.
