1. Preparation:
- Gather the necessary tools and parts, including the new motor mount, a jack and jack stands, a pry bar, a ratchet and socket set, a wrench set, and a breaker bar.
- Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
- Allow the engine and exhaust to cool down if the work will be performed shortly after the vehicle was running.
2. Raise the Vehicle:
- Use a jack to raise the front end of the vehicle until it's high enough to safely access and work under the engine.
- Secure the vehicle using jack stands to ensure it remains safely raised.
3. Locate the Motor Mount:
- The motor mount is typically located at the front or rear of the engine, where it connects the engine to the vehicle's frame.
- In the case of the 1985 Dodge Ram, there are three motor mounts: one on the driver's side, one on the passenger side, and a transmission mount.
4. Remove the Engine Cover:
- If there's an engine cover or panel that provides access to the motor mount, remove it to expose the mount and the bolts that secure it.
5. Remove the Bolts:
- Use a wrench or a ratchet and socket set to loosen and remove the bolts or nuts holding the motor mount to the engine and the frame.
- Be careful not to drop the bolts into the engine compartment.
6. Support the Engine:
- Use a pry bar or block of wood to support the engine slightly to relieve the weight and stress from the old mount.
7. Remove the Old Mount:
- Now that the mount is supported, remove the old motor mount by sliding it out from between the engine and the frame.
8. Install the New Mount:
- Position the new motor mount in place, ensuring it aligns properly with the mounting points.
- Secure the new mount using the bolts you removed earlier. Tighten the bolts until they are snug.
9. Test the Mount:
- Slightly lower the vehicle using the jack, but do not fully lower it yet.
- Check the alignment and seating of the motor mount. If everything looks good, proceed to lower the vehicle.
10. Lower the Vehicle:
- Slowly lower the vehicle until it's fully back on the ground.
11. Test Drive:
- Take the vehicle for a short test drive and pay attention to any unusual vibrations or noises.
12. Re-tighten Bolts (Optional):
- After a short drive, revisit the motor mount area and re-check the tightness of the bolts to ensure they haven't loosened.
Remember that working with heavy engine components and lifting a vehicle can be dangerous. If you're unsure about any step, consult a professional mechanic or refer to a repair manual specific to your vehicle. Safety should always be a top priority when working on your car.
