Tools and Materials Needed:
1. Screwdriver
2. Wrench set (metric and standard)
3. Fan clutch wrench (optional, but recommended)
4. Replacement fan clutch
5. Mechanics gloves
6. Safety glasses

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery:
- Always disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid any electrical accidents.
Step 2: Locate the Fan Clutch:
- Open the hood and locate the fan clutch. It is attached to the front of the engine, behind the fan blades.
Step 3: Remove the Fan Shroud (if applicable):
- Some models of the 1996 Crown Victoria have a fan shroud that needs to be removed to access the fan clutch. Remove any bolts or fasteners holding the shroud in place.
Step 4: Remove the Radiator Overflow Hose (optional):
- If the overflow hose is blocking the access to the fan clutch bolts, disconnect it.
Step 5: Loosen the Fan Clutch Bolts:
- Use the appropriate wrench to loosen (but do not remove) the bolts securing the fan clutch to the water pump. There are typically three bolts.
Step 6: Turn the Engine Over:
- Turn the ignition key just enough to engage the starter (without actually starting the engine) and let it turn for a second. This will loosen up the fan clutch.
Step 7: Remove the Fan Clutch Bolts:
- Once the fan clutch is loosened, use the wrench to completely remove the bolts. Be careful not to drop them into the engine compartment.
Step 8: Detach the Fan Clutch (using a fan clutch wrench):
- Using a fan clutch wrench (highly recommended), turn the fan clutch counterclockwise to remove it from the water pump. If you don't have a fan clutch wrench, use two large screwdrivers or pry bars to pry the clutch off. Be careful not to damage the radiator.
Step 9: Install the New Fan Clutch:
- Position the new fan clutch onto the water pump.
- Hand-tighten the bolts.
- Finish tightening the bolts with the wrench, following the reverse order you loosened them.
Step 10: Reconnect Radiator Overflow Hose (if removed):
- If you had to remove the radiator overflow hose, reconnect it now.
Step 11: Reinstall the Fan Shroud (if removed):
- If the fan shroud was removed, reinstall it and secure it with the appropriate bolts or fasteners.
Step 12: Reconnect the battery:
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Start the vehicle to ensure that the fan clutch is working properly. Monitor the engine temperature to ensure that the fan is engaging and cooling the engine effectively.
Note: It's recommended to have a new fan clutch installed by a professional if you aren't comfortable working on your vehicle.
