Tools and Materials Needed:
- Basic automotive tools
- Transmission jack or lift
- Fluid drain pan
- Transmission fluid
- New governor gear
- Gasket, seals (if necessary)
- Fluid/grease
- Safety glasses and proper protective gear
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Raise the vehicle safely using ramps, jack stands, or a lift.
Step 2: Remove the Transmission Pan
- Place a fluid drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Loosen the transmission pan bolts and carefully remove the pan, allowing the fluid to drain.
Step 3: Remove the Governor Cover
- Locate the governor cover, usually on the driver's side of the transmission.
- Remove the bolts holding the governor cover in place. Be careful not to lose any small parts.
- Remove the governor cover.
Step 4: Access the Governor Gear
- Inspect the inside of the transmission and the exposed components.
Step 5: Remove the Old Governor Gear
- Using the appropriate tools, loosen and remove the old governor gear. Be sure to note its position and orientation for reassembly.
Step 6: Clean and Inspect
- Thoroughly clean the governor area and the internal components.
- Inspect the gear teeth and related components for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
Step 7: Install the New Governor Gear
- Install the new governor gear in the correct position and orientation.
- Secure it properly with the designated bolts or clips.
Step 8: Replace the Governor Cover
- Reinstall the governor cover, ensuring that the gasket or seal is properly seated to prevent leaks.
Step 9: Reinstall the Transmission Pan
- Clean and reinstall the transmission pan, using a new gasket if necessary.
- Tighten the pan bolts securely.
Step 10: Refill Transmission Fluid
- Add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. Refer to the vehicle's manual for the correct type and amount of fluid.
Step 11: Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the governor cover and transmission pan.
Step 12: Test Drive and Reconnect Battery
- Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure proper shifting and operation of the transmission.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 13: Final Checks
- Check for proper fluid level and any unusual noises or behaviors during driving.
