Instructions:
1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery using the wrench.
2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. This will give you more room to work on the alternator.
3. Remove the engine cover by removing the bolts holding it in place.
4. Locate the alternator. It is usually mounted on the front of the engine, and is connected to the engine by a belt.
5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the back of the alternator using your screwdriver or wrench.
6. Loosen the bolts holding the alternator in place using your wrench.
7. Remove the alternator from the engine compartment by lifting it up and out.
8. Make sure that the alternator pulley is aligned with the engine pulley.
9. Tighten the bolts holding the alternator in place.
10. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the back of the alternator.
11. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery using the wrench.
12. Turn the steering wheel all the way back to the left.
13. Check to make sure that the alternator is charging the battery by using the voltmeter. The voltage should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts.
Total Time:
The total time to install an alternator on a 1998 Ford Windstar 3.0 is approximately 1-2 hours.
