Tools and materials needed:
- Welder
- Welding rod
- Wire brush
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
Step 1: Prepare the surfaces
- Clean the welding surfaces of the hinge and body with the wire brush to ensure a good weld.
- Remove all traces of dirt, grease, rust, and paint.
Step 2: Position the hinge
- Place the hinge in its correct position on the vehicle's door or frame.
- Make sure the pin holes align correctly and the gap between the hinge and the door is even.
Step 3: Secure the hinge
- Use clamps to hold the hinge in place and ensure it stays put while welding.
Step 4: Weld the hinge
- Put on your safety goggles and gloves.
- Turn on the welder and set it to the appropriate welding settings for the type of metal you are working with.
- Start welding the hinge by welding a few small tack welds.
- Once the tack welds are complete, go ahead and weld the entire hinge into place.
- Make sure the welds are secure and penetrate both the hinge and the vehicle.
- Allow the welds to cool and harden completely.
Step 5: Clean up the weld
- Remove any excess weld splatter using the wire brush.
- Refinish the weld area as desired, such as painting or applying a rust-resistant coating.
