How do you change a clutch on 1996 Chevy Cavalier?

Tools

* 10mm socket

* 13mm socket

* 15mm socket

* 17mm socket

* 22mm socket

* ratchet

* breaker bar

* pry bar

* jack and jack stands

* large pry bar

* screwdriver

* hammer

* clutch alignment tool

Instructions:

1. Locate clutch master cylinder. It is bolted to firewall between brake booster and clutch pedal.

2. Disconnect hydraulic line from master cylinder by twisting plastic fitting clockwise. Plug line to prevent fluid loss.

3. Remove nuts securing starter solenoid wire and power wire from starter. Remove the wires as well as the battery ground strap from transmission housing.

4. Remove two 13mm bolts securing shift linkage to transmission, then disconnect linkage.

5. Raise car with jack stands and then crawl under vehicle.

6. Slide a drain pan under transmission to catch fluid. Remove the lower bell housing bolts using a 15mm wrench or socket. Then, remove the upper bell housing bolts using a 17mm wrench or socket. Be careful not to let transmission fall.

7. With help from a friend, slowly lower transmission until free of engine block. Guide the input shaft out of pilot bearing. Move the transmission assembly to the side. It is not necessary to completely remove transmission unless flywheel is damaged.

8. Remove pressure plate bolts using an 11mm wrench or socket. Remove pressure plate and clutch disc. Clean flywheel surface with a wire brush and solvent, inspecting for signs of damage. If necessary, replace the flywheel.

9. Insert clutch alignment tool into the pilot bearing to center new clutch disc. Hold new disc in place with alignment tool and install pressure plate. Tighten pressure plate bolts in a star pattern. Torque should be 15-18 ft/lbs (20-24 nm).

10. Remove clutch alignment tool.

11. With the help of a friend, reverse steps 7 through 4. Tighten bell housing bolts in a crisscross pattern in three stages: 18, 36, and 54 ft/lbs (24, 48, and 72 nm).

12. Bleed clutch system by opening bleeder screw on salve cylinder on transmission until clutch fluid flows out without any air bubbles. Tighten bleeder screw with a 10mm wrench.

13. Start the engine and depress clutch pedal several times to check for proper clutch operation.
