Tools and Materials Needed:
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver or trim removal tool
- 10mm wrench or socket
- New replacement headlight (sealed beam or halogen, as per your preference)
Procedure:
1. Park your Beetle in a safe area, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool down if it's recently been in use.
2. Open the front trunk (aka "boot" or "bonnet").
3. Locate the back of the headlight housing. You'll see a large rubber seal around the circumference of the light assembly.
4. Remove the rubber seal. Start by pulling the seal gently from one corner, and work your way around, taking care not to tear it.
5. Behind the rubber seal, you'll find a metal housing held by several Phillips-head screws. Use your screwdriver to loosen and remove these screws. (Note: Some Beetles may have an additional ring holding the light assembly in place, use a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to gently pry this ring off carefully)
6. Once all the screws are removed, you can access the headlight assembly. Disconnect the electrical plugs attached to the headlight. Disconnect the ground strap if there is one.
7. Remove the old headlight from its housing. Gently squeeze the tabs holding the light in place and pull it out.
8. Inspect the area around the headlight lens for any damage or corrosion. Clean it up if necessary.
9. Install the new headlight by inserting it into the housing and securing it with the tabs.
10. Reconnect the electrical plugs and the ground strap (if applicable).
11. Reattach the metal housing using the Phillips-head screws.
12. Replece the rubber seal around the headlight housing. Press it firmly to ensure it's in place.
13. Close the front trunk, and you're done.
Remember, before replacing your headlight, check your local regulations and laws regarding the type of headlights allowed in your jurisdiction. Some older vehicles are exempt from certain headlight regulations. Also, if your Beetle has an older wiring system, you may wish to seek the assistance of a competent auto electrician or consult a relevant repair manual for your vehicle if you are unsure about any step.
