How do you change the rear brakes on a 2000 VW Beetle?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Jack and jack stands

- Lug wrench

- Socket wrench set

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Brake caliper grease

- Brake cleaner

- New brake pads and rotors (if needed)

Instructions:

1.) Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

2.) Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels, but do not remove them completely.

3.) Raise the rear of the car using the jack and place jack stands under the frame for safety.

4.) Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

5.) Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the brake caliper off the rotor.

6.) Inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear. If the pads are less than 1/4 inch thick or the rotors are grooved or cracked, they will need to be replaced.

7.) Clean the brake rotor with brake cleaner and allow it to dry.

8.) If replacing the pads, install the new brake pads.

- Slide the new brake pads into the caliper.

- Ensure the new brake pads are seated correctly.

9.) If replacing the rotors, install the new brake rotors.

- Place the new brake rotor on the wheel hub.

- Replace the lug nuts and tighten them in a star pattern.

- Lower the car using the jack.

- Test the brakes by applying them firmly several times.

Tips:

- When reinstalling the wheel, be sure to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to evenly distribute the pressure on the wheel.

- If you are replacing the brake pads, make sure to wear safety glasses and gloves. Brake dust can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.

- If you have any questions about changing the brakes, consult a qualified mechanic.
