How do you loosen the tensioner pulley on Saab 9000?

Using the M6 Bolt Trick

1. Remove the serpentine belt.

2. Remove the bolt holding the tensioner arm to the front of the engine.

3. Thread a 10 mm bolt into the tensioner arm at the top next to the adjusting wedge until it stops - do not tighten.

4. Slide a suitably sized pry bar (3/8” drive extension typically works) in front of the head of the 10 mm bolt you just installed.

5. Insert a 10mm allen wrench into the tensioner arm adjustment hole.

6. While pressing the pry bar to tighten the belt, push down with the Allen key to force the adjustment wedge against the pry bar.

7. Once the adjustment wedge is tight against the pry bar pull the 10mm bolt completely out.

8. Remove the pry bar and the allen wrench.

9. Lift up the tensioner arm and slide the new belt around all of the pulleys except the alternator pulley.

10. Insert the 10 mm bolt into the threaded hole (as far in as it will go) and pry up on the lever arm as in steps 4-6 except do not force the wedge past the tensioner body on the bottom of the arm - this is to engage the belt guide.

11. Pull the 10 mm bolt the rest of the way out once the arm is in place.

12. Install the tensioner arm bolt.

13. Install the serpentine belt around the alternator, making sure that the tensioner arm has fully engaged the belt guide.

14. Make sure the belt alignment looks good.

15. Tighten the tensioner arm bolt, and remove the tool.
