Why do cars get stuck between 1st and reverse gears?

Cars don't get stuck between first and reverse gears. There is no mechanical connection between these two gears. First gear and reverse are on the opposite ends of the gearbox, and to engage any gear, you have to disengage the previous one. Therefore, it's impossible for the car to get stuck between two gears.
