Tools Needed:
- Oil filter wrench
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
- New oil filter (check your owner's manual for the correct size)
- Rags
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Prepare your dirt bike
- Park your bike on level ground.
- Turn on the engine and let it run for a few minutes to warm up the oil. This will make it flow more easily when you drain it.
- Turn off the engine and let it cool down for a few minutes.
Step 2: Locate the oil drain plug
- The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the engine, near the oil filter. It's typically a 17mm bolt.
Step 3: Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug
- Position the oil drain pan directly underneath the oil drain plug.
Step 4: Loosen the oil drain plug
- Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.
Step 5: Allow the oil to drain
- Allow the oil to completely drain out of the engine. This may take a few minutes.
Step 6: Replace the oil drain plug
- Once all of the oil has drained out, replace the oil drain plug. Tighten the plug until it is snug.
Step 7: Locate the oil filter
- The oil filter is usually located near the oil drain plug. It's a cylindrical-shaped object with a black cap.
Step 8: Remove the oil filter
- Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.
Step 9: Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
- This will help create a seal and prevent leaks.
Step 10: Screw on the new oil filter
- Hand-tighten the new oil filter until it is snug. Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
Step 11: Add new oil to the engine
- Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in your owner's manual.
Step 12: Check the oil level
- Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
Step 13: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- This will circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
Step 14: Check for leaks
- Look under the bike for any leaks. If you see any leaks, immediately tighten the oil drain plug or oil filter until the leak stops.
Step 15: Dispose of the old oil and filter properly
- Take the old oil and filter to a recycling center or auto parts store for proper disposal.
