How do you adjust the valves on a 1986 Suzuki VS700 Intruder?

To adjust the valves on a 1986 Suzuki VS700 Intruder, you will need the following tools:

* 10mm socket

* 12mm socket

* 14mm socket

* 17mm socket

* Allen wrench set

* Feeler gauge

* Pliers

* Flat-head screwdriver

* Oil drain pan

* New oil filter

* New crush washer for oil drain plug

1. Warm up the engine. Start the motorcycle and let it run for a few minutes to warm up the engine. This will make the valves easier to adjust.

2. Remove the valve covers. Once the engine is warmed up, turn it off and remove the spark plugs. You can now use the 10mm socket to remove the valve covers.

3. Check the valve clearance. Use the feeler gauge to check the clearance between the valves and the camshaft. The specification for this clearance is 0.004-0.006 inches (0.10-0.15mm) for the intake valves and 0.006-0.008 inches (0.15-0.20mm) for the exhaust valves.

- If the clearance is too small, you will need to loosen the locknut on the valve adjuster and turn the adjuster screw clockwise to increase the clearance.

- If the clearance is too large, you will need to loosen the locknut on the valve adjuster and turn the adjuster screw counterclockwise to decrease the clearance.

1. Install valve cover gasket. If you are re-using the old gasket, just place it back in place. If you are using a new gasket, first remove the old gasket from the valve cover and then apply a thin coat of silicone sealant to the new gasket. Place the new gasket on the valve cover and install the bolts you removed earlier.

2. Install valve cover bolts. Reinstall the valve covers and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

3. Replace spark plugs. Hand-tighten the spark plugs and then tighten the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench.

4. Start the motorcycle and check for leaks. Start the motorcycle and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the valve covers. If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts until the leak stops.

5. Test ride the motorcycle. Take the motorcycle for a test ride to make sure the valves are adjusted correctly. The motorcycle should run smoothly and without any knocking noises.
