- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- 10mm Wrench
- 5mm Allen Key
- New Voltage Regulator
- Battery Tender
- Disconnect the battery.
Step 1: Remove the stock regulator
- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery tender.
- Disconnect the battery by removing the negative (black) cable followed by the positive (red) cable. Use a 10mm wrench to loosen and remove the nuts.
- Remove the battery tray by removing the two bolts with a 10mm wrench.
- Remove the two 5mm Allen screws that hold the stock voltage regulator in place.
- Disconnect the two electrical connectors from the stock regulator.
- Remove the stock regulator.
Step 2: Prepare the new voltage regulator
- Insert a short length of wire into one of the electrical connectors to prevent it from accidentally grounding.
- Make a note of the position of the wires in the other connector.
- Disconnect the wires and insert them into the corresponding positions in the new voltage regulator.
- Connect the battery tender.
Step 3: Install the new regulator
- Place the new voltage regulator on the bracket.
- Secure it with the two 5mm Allen screws.
- Connect the battery.
Step 4: Test the new regulator
- Turn on the ignition and check the voltage at the battery. It should be between 13.8 and 14.4 volts.
- Rev the engine and check the voltage again. It should remain within the same range.
- If the voltage is not correct, adjust the voltage regulator.
Step 5: Reinstall the battery tray and battery
- Reinstall the battery tray and secure with two bolts
- Place the battery into the battery and reconnect the terminal wires
- Test the bike to ensure the voltage regulator is working properly.
Step 6: Enjoy your ride
- Your 99’ harley Davidson Heritage Softail is now ready for a ride!
