1. Safety Preparation:
• Ensure that the motorcycle is turned off, the key is removed, and it's in a well-ventilated area.
Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
2. Locate Starter Solenoid:
• The starter solenoid is usually mounted near the starter motor on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It's a small cylindrical device with two or three wires connected to it.
3. Disconnect Solenoid Wires:
• Disconnect the wires connected to the starter solenoid. Use a flathead screwdriver or pliers to gently pry off the wire connectors from the solenoid terminals.
Make note of the wire positions for reconnecting them correctly later.
4. Remove Solenoid Bolts:
• Locate the bolts that secure the starter solenoid to the motorcycle frame or starter motor.
• Using the appropriate wrench, loosen and remove these bolts.
5. Remove Starter Solenoid:
• Once the bolts are removed, carefully slide the starter solenoid off its mounting location.
Be cautious not to drop or lose any small components.
6. Inspect the Old Solenoid:
• Inspect the old starter solenoid for damage, such as burnt wires or worn contacts. If necessary, replace damaged components.
7. Install New Solenoid:
• Position the new starter solenoid in its original location.
• Reinstall the bolts that secure the solenoid and tighten them securely.
8. Reconnect Solenoid Wires:
• Reconnect the solenoid wires to their respective terminals.
Ensure the connections are snug and in proper positions as noted earlier.
9. Test the Starter:
• Turn the ignition key to the "On" position without attempting to start the engine.
• Listen for a "click" sound when you turn the key. This confirms that the solenoid is engaging the starter motor.
If you don't hear a click, double-check the wiring and connections.
10. Start the Motorcycle:
• Attempt to start the motorcycle by pressing the starter button or kicking the motorcycle if it has a kickstart.
• If the engine starts smoothly, the starter solenoid was successfully replaced.
Note: The steps mentioned above are general guidelines. Consult your Harley-Davidson motorcycle's service manual or the Harley-Davidson dealership for specific instructions and torque specifications pertaining to your particular motorcycle model.
