* Phillips head screwdriver
* Flat head screwdriver
* 5/16" wrench
Step 1: Locate the carburetor
The carburetor is located on the top of the engine, usually near the air filter. It is a metal device with several fuel lines connected to it.
Step 2: Remove the air filter cover
The air filter cover is located on top of the carburetor. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding it in place and lift it off.
Step 3: Locate the idle screw
The idle screw is located on the side of the carburetor. It is a brass screw with a spring around it.
Step 4: Turn the idle screw
Use a flat head screwdriver to turn the idle screw clockwise until the engine begins to run smoothly. Do not overtighten the screw or the engine will run too fast.
Step 5: Replace the air filter cover
Replace the air filter cover and secure it with the screws.
Step 6: Test the mower
Start the mower and let it run for a few minutes. Check to make sure that the engine is running smoothly and that there is no smoke coming from the exhaust. If necessary, make small adjustments to the idle screw until the mower is running properly.
Here are some additional tips for adjusting the carburetor on a 1989 Murray riding mower:
* If the engine is running too fast, turn the idle screw counterclockwise.
* If the engine is running too slow, turn the idle screw clockwise.
* If the engine is smoking, it is likely that the mixture is too rich. Turn the idle screw clockwise to lean out the mixture.
* If the engine is not starting, it is possible that the mixture is too lean. Turn the idle screw counterclockwise to richen the mixture.
