- Park the mower on level ground.
- Turn the engine off and allow it to cool.
- Engage the parking brake.
Step 2: Open the Hood and Disconnect the Spark Plug Wire
- Open the hood of the mower.
- Locate the spark plug wire and disconnect it from the spark plug.
- This will prevent the engine from starting accidentally while you are working on the mower.
Step 3: Remove the Mower Deck
- Locate the bolts that hold the mower deck onto the frame of the mower.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove these bolts.
- Carefully remove the mower deck and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the Old Mower Belt
- Locate the mower belt. It is a long, black belt that runs from the engine to the mower deck.
- Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley that holds the mower belt in place.
- Remove the old mower belt from the mower.
Step 5: Install the New Mower Belt
- Place the new mower belt around the pulleys.
- Make sure that the belt is routed correctly.
- Use a wrench to tighten the tensioner pulley.
Step 6: Reattach the Mower Deck
- Carefully lift the mower deck and reattach it to the frame of the mower.
- Replace the bolts that you removed in Step 3. Tighten the bolts securely.
Step 7: Reconnect the Spark Plug Wire
- Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
Step 8: Start the Engine and Test the Mower
- Start the engine of the mower.
- Let the mower run for a few minutes and test the operation of the mower.
If the mower is operating correctly, you have successfully replaced the mower belt on your John Deere R72 Riding Lawn Mower.
