The brushes on a 1971 VW camper are located in the distributor. To change the brushes, you will need the following tools:
* Socket wrench
* Phillips head screwdriver
* New brushes
Instructions
1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Use the socket wrench to remove the distributor hold-down bolt.
4. Lift the distributor out of the engine.
5. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the brush assembly in place.
6. Remove the old brushes and install the new ones.
7. Reassemble the distributor and install it back in the engine.
8. Reconnect the battery.
Tips
* When installing the new brushes, make sure that they are seated properly in the brush holders.
* If the brushes are too long, they can rub against the distributor cap and cause damage.
* If the brushes are too short, they may not make contact with the commutator and the engine will not run properly.
