How to Change the Oil Filter in a 2000 Mercedes S430

Tools and Materials Needed

* New oil filter (Mercedes-Benz part number A 000 180 26 09)

* Oil filter wrench

* Oil drain pan

* Funnel

* New engine oil (5W-40 synthetic oil, approximately 8.5 quarts)

Instructions

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.

2. Allow the engine to cool down for several minutes.

3. Open the hood of the vehicle.

4. Locate the oil filter housing. It is located on the top of the engine, near the front of the vehicle.

5. Place the oil drain pan under the oil filter housing.

6. Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter.

7. Remove the oil filter from the housing and allow the oil to drain into the drain pan.

8. Clean the oil filter housing mating surface with a clean rag.

9. Apply a thin coat of new engine oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.

10. Screw the new oil filter onto the housing until it is snug.

11. Top off the engine oil with new engine oil.

12. Check the oil level using the dipstick and add more oil if necessary.

13. Close the hood of the vehicle.

14. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

15. Check for any leaks around the oil filter housing.

Tips

* Be sure to use the correct type of oil filter for your vehicle. The wrong filter can cause engine damage.

* When removing the oil filter, be careful not to spill any oil on the engine or exhaust manifold.
