Tools and Materials Needed:
- Jack and jack stands
- Socket wrench set
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Wrench
- Replacement rear shocks
- New nuts and bolts (if necessary)
Step 1: Safety First
Ensure your car is parked on a level surface, and apply the parking brake. Engage the transmission into the "Park" position for automatic cars and the "First" gear for manual cars.
Step 2: Prepare the Car
- Use a jack to raise the rear of the car.
- Place jack stands under the car to support its weight.
Step 3: Locate Shock Mounting Bolts
- Once the car is securely lifted, locate the upper shock mounting bolts in the trunk.
- Open the trunk and remove the trunk liner to expose the upper shock mounts.
Step 4: Disconnect Shock Absorber
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the upper shock mounting nut or bolt.
- Be cautious not to drop the hardware.
- Disconnect any electrical connectors attached to the shock absorber for self-leveling systems, if applicable.
Step 5: Access Lower Bolts
- Get under the car and locate the lower shock mounting bolts.
Step 6: Remove Lower Bolts
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the lower shock mounting bolts.
- Carefully remove the bolts without dropping them.
Step 7: Remove the Old Shock
- With the upper and lower bolts removed, you can now pull the old shock absorber assembly straight out of the vehicle.
Step 8: Transfer Components
- Transfer the upper shock mount, if in good condition, to the new shock absorber.
Step 9: Install the New Shock
- Insert the new shock absorber into its designated position.
- Align the shock's upper mount with the corresponding bolt holes in the body.
- Reinstall the upper mounting bolt or nut and secure it.
Step 10: Reattach Lower Mounting Bolt
- Slide the lower portion of the shock into its designated position and align the holes in the shock mount with the holes in the rear axle.
- Reinstall the lower mounting bolts and secure them.
Step 11: Test the Shock
- Gently press down on the rear of the car and release it. The vehicle should bounce and settle smoothly.
Step 12: Repeat for the Other Side
- Repeat the above steps for the other rear shock absorber on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Step 13: Lower the Car
- Use the jack to lower the car and remove the jack stands.
Step 14: Test Drive
- Take the car for a test drive to ensure that the new shocks are functioning properly and the ride quality has improved.
