You can check the fluid level without starting the engine, but it is recommended that you run the engine for a few minutes to warm the fluid up before checking it.
Park your Volkswagen Beetle on a level surface.
Turn the engine off and allow it to cool down for a few minutes.
Open the hood of your Volkswagen Beetle.
Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. The dipstick is usually located near the back of the engine, towards the driver's side. It is often marked with a yellow handle.
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean.
Insert the dipstick back into the transmission fluid reservoir.
Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
If the fluid level is low, add transmission fluid. The type of transmission fluid that you need will vary depending on the model of your Volkswagen Beetle. Consult your owner's manual for more information.
Reinsert the dipstick.
Close the hood of your Volkswagen Beetle.
