With these tools acquired, follow these steps to adjust the timing:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Locate the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley.
4. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing mark is aligned with the "0" mark on the timing scale.
5. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt.
6. Rotate the distributor until the contact points are just starting to open.
7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
9. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light.
10. Adjust the timing as needed by rotating the distributor.
Tips:
- If you are not comfortable performing this task, you can take your car to a qualified mechanic.
- Be careful not to drop the distributor cap. If the cap is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
