_Note: The engine oil and the transmission oil are not the same. It is also important to note the difference in the drain plug style to avoid accidentally draining the wrong fluid._
Changing the transmission oil on an air cooled VW Beetle is not a difficult task. You can do it yourself with a few simple tools. First ensure that your vehicle is raised up appropriately by jacking it up and securing the vehicle on jack stands. If you use ramps to raise the vehicle to slide under the car, you will not be able to reach the drain plug.
Here are the steps on how to change the transmission oil in an air cooled VW Beetle:
1. Gather the necessary tools and materials.
* 23mm wrench
* Drain pan
* New transmission oil
* Funnel
2. Locate the transmission oil drain plug.
The transmission oil drain plug is located on the bottom of the transmission case, just below the fill plug. It is a 23mm hex-head bolt.
3. Place the drain pan under the transmission oil drain plug.
Position the drain pan under the transmission oil drain plug to catch the oil that will drain out.
4. Loosen the transmission oil drain plug.
Using a 23mm wrench, loosen the transmission oil drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the drain pan.
5. Allow the transmission oil to drain.
Allow the transmission oil to drain completely into the drain pan.
6. Replace the transmission oil drain plug.
Once the transmission oil has drained out, replace the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug until it is snug.
7. Locate the transmission oil fill plug.
The transmission oil fill plug is located on the side of the transmission case. It is a 23mm hex-head bolt.
8. Remove the transmission oil fill plug.
Use a 23mm wrench to loosen and remove the transmission oil fill plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the drain pan.
9. Add new transmission oil.
Using a funnel, add _400 ml_ of new transmission oil to the transmission.
10. Replace the transmission oil fill plug.
Once you have added the new transmission oil, replace the fill plug. Tighten the fill plug and plug until it is snug.
11. Check the transmission oil level.
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then, turn off the engine and check the transmission oil level. The oil level should be at the bottom of the threads at the fill plug hole.
12. Add some oil if needed.
If the oil level is below the bottom of the threads, add a small amount of oil. Repeat this process until the oil level is correct.
13. Reinstall any skid plates or belly pans.
Replace the skid plates or belly pans that were removed to access the transmission oil drain and fill plugs.
That's it! You have now successfully changed the transmission oil in your air cooled VW Beetle.
