1. Prepare for the lift.
- Assess the load: Consider its weight, size, and shape. Determine if it is too heavy or bulky to lift alone.
- Clear the area: Remove obstacles and ensure there is enough space for you to lift and carry the load.
- Wear proper clothing: Wear snug-fitting clothing that will not get caught on the load. Avoid loose clothing or dangling jewelry that could become entangled.
- Use proper lifting equipment: Use lifting straps or gloves if necessary to protect your hands.
2. Position your body correctly.
- Stand close to the load with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Bend your knees and keep your back straight, while keeping your feet flat on the ground.
- Grasp the load with your hands, using an overhand grip.
- Pull the load close to your body before lifting.
3. Lift smoothly.
- Inhale and then exhale as you lift the load, using your leg muscles to do most of the work.
- Keep the load close to your body and lift it evenly, without jerking.
- As you lift, keep your back straight and your head in line with your spine. Do not twist or bend your body.
4. Transport the load.
- When carrying the load, keep it close to your body and maintain a good posture.
- Walk slowly and carefully, taking small steps.
- Avoid turning your body while carrying the load. Instead, pivot your feet to change direction.
5. Set the load down safely.
- When setting the load down, bend your knees and keep your back straight.
- Lower the load slowly and carefully to its designated location.
- Avoid twisting or bending your body.
