1. Park your truck on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Turn the engine off, put the truck into gear, and chock the wheels.
3. Lift the rear of the truck with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
4. Using an 18mm impact socket, loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels, then remove the nuts with a socket wrench.
5. Remove the rear wheels.
6. Remove the brake line on both wheels.
7. Locate the four bolts that hold the rear axle to the truck frame. These bolts are located on both sides of the axle, just above the U-bolts.
8. Remove the bolts on one side of the axle and loosen but don't remove on the other side.
9. Place a pry bar between the axle housing and the frame and pry the axle away from the frame.
10. The pry bar will be difficult to get under the axle housing without removing the air brake line.
11. Repeat steps 8 and 9 on the other side of the axle.
12. Once the axle is free from the frame, pull down and remove the leaf springs.
13. Slide the axle out of the truck.
14. Slide the pry bar through the axle hole in the frame for easy removal.
