1. Park the skid loader on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Locate the four drive chain tensioners, two on each side of the machine.
3. Loosen the lock nuts on the tensioners using a wrench.
4. Turn the adjusting nuts of the chain tensioners clockwise a 1/4 turn at a time.
5. Check the tension of the drive chains by pulling them at the midpoint with force of approximately 44lbs (20 kilograms), the deflection should be from ¼ inch (6.4mm) and ¾ (19.05mm) of the inch.
6. Re-tighten the lock nuts after achieving required adjustment and re-check after operation to confirm chains tightness.
Here are some additional tips for adjusting drive chains on a Case 1840 skid loader:
• Make sure that the skid loader is on a level surface when you adjust the drive chains.
• Loosen the lock nuts just enough to allow the tensioners to be turned. Do not loosen them too much or the lock nuts may come off.
• Turn the adjusting nuts until the drive chains have the correct tension. The chains should be snug, but not too tight.
• Re-tighten the lock nuts after you have finished adjusting the chain tensioners.
NOTE: If the drive chains are too loose, they can come off the sprockets while the operator is driving, making the equipment uncontrollable.
