1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Locate the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley.
4. Turn the crankshaft pulley until the timing mark is aligned with the pointer on the timing cover.
5. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt.
6. Turn the distributor until the points are just starting to open.
7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Replace the distributor cap.
9. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
10. Start the engine and check the timing with the timing light.
The timing should be set to 5° BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). If the timing is off, repeat steps 5-9 until the timing is correct.
Note: If your Volvo 740 GLE has an automatic transmission, you will need to put the transmission in "Drive" in order to set the timing.
