Why the side door lock when button is pressed on a remote for 2002 Volkswagen Passat?

The side door lock does not work when the button is pressed on the remote for a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. The Passat does have a childproof lock feature, but it works by manually sliding the lock knob on the inside of the rear doors or using the key to lock it from the outside. However, the childproof lock can only prevent people from opening the door from the inside and does not work with the remote.
