Tools Needed:
- Vehicle-specific O2 sensor socket or wrench (usually 22 mm)
- Oxygen sensor with pigtail connector
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers

Procedure:
1. Locate the O2 Sensor:
- Open the hood of your BMW 740i and locate the O2 sensor.
- It's usually screwed into the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe near the engine's cylinder head.

6. Inspect the Old Sensor:
- Check the removed O2 sensor for signs of wear, contamination, or damage. If it's excessively dirty or damaged, replacing it is recommended.
7. Clean the O2 Sensor Bung:
- Clean the O2 sensor "bung" (the threaded hole in the exhaust) using a wire brush or compressed air to remove any accumulated debris or rust.
8. Install the New O2 Sensor:
- Screw the new O2 sensor into the bung by hand until it's hand-tight.
- Then use the oxygen sensor socket or wrench to tighten it securely, but do not overtighten.
9. Reconnect the Electrical Connector:
- Plug the pigtail connector of the new O2 sensor back into the vehicle's wiring harness connector.
10. Replace the O2 Sensor Cover:
- If you removed a protective cover, reinstall it over the O2 sensor.
11. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery.
12. Start the Engine:
- Start the engine of your BMW 740i and let it run for a few minutes to allow the engine control unit (ECU) to relearn the new oxygen sensor.
13. Test Drive the Car:
- Take the car for a test drive to ensure the engine runs smoothly, and there are no noticeable changes in performance or emissions.
