Step 1: Prepare your vehicle:
- Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down completely.
- Block the wheels that will not be off the ground.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack or use a vehicle lift.
- Remove the tire and rim from the side where the CV axle needs to be removed.
Step 2: Locating the CV Axle:
- Once you have removed the tire and rim, you will be able to see the CV axle.
- Follow the axle until you reach the inner CV joint.
Step 3: Remove the Tie Rod End:
- Locate the tie rod end connected to the wheel hub assembly.
- Remove the cotter pin that secures the castle nut.
- Loosen the castle nut using a wrench while holding the tie rod end with another wrench to prevent it from turning.
- Separate the tie rod end from the wheel hub assembly by removing the bolt/nut that holds it in place.
Step 4: Remove Ball Joint:
- Locate the ball joint. It connects the control arm to the wheel hub assembly.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut securing the ball joint.
- Use a ball joint separator tool to separate the ball joint from the wheel hub assembly.
- Remove the bolts holding the ball joint to the control arm, and take out the ball joint.
Step 5: Remove the Axle Nut:
- On the transmission side of the CV axle, there will be an axle nut.
- Loosen this nut using a deep well socket and wrench, but do not remove it completely at this point.
Step 6: Disconnect Inner CV Joint:
- Using a pry bar, carefully separate the inner CV joint from the transmission.
- Be cautious as there may be some grease from the joint.
- Once separated, use zip ties or mechanic wires to secure the CV axle out of the way.
Step 7: Remove the Axle Nut and Axle:
- Go back to the transmission side and completely remove the axle nut.
- Gently tap the end of the CV axle with a hammer or mallet to help loosen it from the transmission.
- Pull the axle out of the transmission.
Step 8: Clean and Inspect the area:
- Clean the surrounding area of any grease and dirt.
- Inspect the CV axle, joints, and transmission for any damage or excessive wear.
Step 9: Reinstallation:
- If reinstalling the CV axle, reverse the steps to install the new or repaired CV axle. Be sure to tighten all nuts and bolts securely and use new cotter pins where applicable.
Step 10: Lower the vehicle:
- Lower the vehicle carefully using a jack or vehicle lift.
- Reinstall the tire and rim.
Note: It's recommended to consult your Isuzu Rodeo repair manual or seek professional assistance if you are unsure about any of these steps.
