1. Make sure the car is in park, or in neutral if you have a manual transmission.
2. Foot brake. While holding down the brake pedal with your right foot, press the emergency brake release button with your left foot. The button may be located on the floorboard near the driver's seat or on the center console.
3. Hand brake. If you have a hand brake, release it by pulling up on the lever until it clicks.
4. Test the emergency brake by gently applying pressure to the brake pedal. If the emergency brake is still engaged, you will feel resistance. If the emergency brake is disengaged, the brake pedal will move freely.
