1. Disconnect the battery.
- Locate the battery in the engine compartment.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the negative battery terminal cable.
2. Remove the starter relay.
- The starter relay is located on the driver's side inner fender, near the battery.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the two nuts that hold the starter relay in place.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter relay.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- The air cleaner assembly is located on the top of the engine.
- Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws that hold the air cleaner assembly in place.
- Lift the air cleaner assembly off the engine.
4. Remove the starter.
- The starter is located on the passenger side of the engine, behind the exhaust manifold.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place.
- Slide the starter out of the engine compartment.
5. Inspect the starter.
- Inspect the starter for any damage or wear and tear. If you see any evidence of damage, the starter should be replaced.
6. Reinstall the starter.
- Slide the starter back into the engine compartment.
- Replace the two bolts that hold the starter in place, and tighten them securely.
7. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly.
- Place the air cleaner assembly back on top of the engine, and secure it with the screws that you removed earlier.
8. Reinstall the starter relay.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the starter relay.
- Replace the two nuts that hold the starter relay in place, and tighten them securely.
9. Reconnect the battery.
- Connect the negative battery terminal cable to the battery, and tighten the nut securely.
This will remove the starter from the 1984 Nissan Z20 truck.
