Tools and Materials Needed:
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Funnel
- New water pump gasket
- New water pump (order the specific model for your Cadillac)
- Coolant/Antifreeze (check owner's manual for recommended type)
- Rags
- Safety goggles
Step 1: Park and Cool Down
- Park the vehicle on a flat surface.
- Allow the engine to cool down completely to avoid any burns.
Step 2: Drain Coolant
- Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator or the engine block.
- Place a container underneath the drain plug and remove it.
- Allow all the coolant to drain.
- Caution: Be careful, as the drained coolant may be hot.
Step 3: Remove Accessories and Belt
- Remove the accessory drive belt by loosening the tensioner pulley bolt and slipping the belt off.
- If necessary, remove any components obstructing access to the water pump, such as the air cleaner assembly.
Step 4: Disconnect Hoses
- Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the water pump.
- Use pliers or a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps and pry the hoses off.
- Expect some leakage of any remaining coolant.
Step 5: Remove the Old Water Pump
- Locate the water pump mounting bolts.
- Use the appropriate socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts.
- Carefully remove the old water pump by gently prying it away from the engine block.
Step 6: Clean and Prepare
- Remove any remaining gasket material and sealant from the mating surface on the engine block.
- Clean the surface thoroughly with a rag and make sure it's free from debris.
Step 7: Install the New Water Pump
- Apply a thin layer of sealant around the new water pump's gasket surface.
- Place the new water pump gasket onto the engine block.
- Carefully place the new water pump in position, aligning it with the gasket and mounting holes.
- Reinstall the mounting bolts and tighten them gradually in a criss-cross pattern to ensure an even seal.
Step 8: Reconnect Hoses and Belt
- Reattach the upper and lower radiator hoses to the water pump.
- Tighten the hose clamps securely to prevent leaks.
- Reinstall the accessory drive belt and tension it according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Step 9: Refill Coolant
- Remove the radiator cap and pour in the recommended amount of fresh coolant.
- Mix it with water if required (consult your owner's manual).
- Continue adding coolant until the radiator and coolant reservoir are full.
Step 10: Test and Verify
- Replace the radiator cap and start the engine.
- Let the engine run for a few minutes and observe for any leaks around the water pump and hoses.
- Monitor the temperature gauge to ensure that the engine is cooling properly.
Step 11: Clean Up
- Clean up any spilled coolant and dispose of it properly.
Remember, replacing a water pump can be a complex task, so if you're unsure or uncomfortable doing it yourself, it's best to consult a professional mechanic.
