1. Turn off the power to the refrigerator and unplug it.
2. Locate the defrost switch. It is usually located in the freezer compartment, near the evaporator coils.
3. Remove the cover from the defrost switch.
4. Set your multimeter to the ohms setting.
5. Touch one probe of the multimeter to each terminal of the defrost switch.
6. The multimeter should read zero ohms if the switch is closed, or infinite ohms if the switch is open.
7. If the multimeter reads infinite ohms, the defrost switch is open and needs to be replaced.
8. If the multimeter reads zero ohms, the defrost switch is closed and is working properly.
9. Replace the cover on the defrost switch.
10. Plug the refrigerator back in and turn on the power.
