Tools:
- New automatic transmission fluid (Dexron III)
- Oil filter wrench / 24 mm socket wrench
- Fluid pump or funnel
- Oil pan
- Rags
- Safety goggles
Instructions:
1. Gather Materials:
Ensure that you have all necessary tools and new automatic transmission fluid. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the recommended fluid type and quantity.
2. Safety First:
Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from any potential fluid splashes.
3. Locate Drain Plug:
- Lift and safely secure your vehicle, either using ramps or a car jack with jack stands.
- Locate the automatic transmission fluid drain plug. In the 2003 Laguna, it's usually a 24 mm bolt on the bottom of the transmission oil pan.
4. Drain Old Fluid:
- Place an oil pan beneath the drain plug to collect the old fluid.
- Use the appropriate wrench or socket to loosen the drain plug and allow the old fluid to drain completely.
5. Replace the Drain Plug:
- Once the fluid has drained, reinstall the drain plug and tighten securely.
6. Locate Filler Plug:
- Identify the automatic transmission fluid filler plug. It may be located on the side or top of the transmission.
7. Add New Fluid:
- Use a fluid pump or funnel to add new automatic transmission fluid through the filler hole.
- Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the recommended fluid level and add accordingly.
8. Check Fluid Level:
- Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.
- Turn off the engine, wait a couple of minutes, and check the fluid level again.
- Ensure the fluid level falls within the recommended range on the transmission fluid dipstick.
9. Perform Test Drive:
- Take the vehicle for a short test drive and check for any abnormal behavior or leaks.
- If everything seems normal, the automatic transmission fluid change is complete.
10. Proper Disposal:
- Ensure you dispose of the old transmission fluid responsibly. Many auto parts stores and recycling centers offer used oil and fluid disposal services.
Tips and Precautions:
- Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific fluid type and capacity requirements.
- Ensure to tighten both the drain plug and filler plug securely to avoid leaks.
- If the transmission fluid is very dark or smells burnt, it may be necessary to perform transmission service or have it inspected by a trained technician.
