Instructions:
---
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Engage the parking brake and open the hood of your vehicle.
3. Locate the alternator belt. It is located on the front of the engine, near the bottom.
4. Loosen the accessory belt tensioner. The tensioner is located on the side of the alternator. Use a socket and ratchet to loosen the bolt that holds the tensioner in place.
5. Remove the old alternator belt. Once the tensioner is loosened, you can remove the belt by slipping it off the pulleys.
6. Inspect the old belt for wear and damage. If the belt is cracked, frayed, or glazed, it should be replaced.
7. Install the new alternator belt. Route the new belt around the pulleys in the same way that the old belt was installed.
8. Retighten the accessory belt tensioner. Once the belt is in place, re-tighten the tensioner bolt until the belt is snug.
9. Close the hood and start your vehicle.
10. Check the belt tension. The belt should be tight enough to prevent slipping, but not so tight that it puts excessive strain on the alternator bearings. If necessary, adjust the tensioner bolt until the belt tension is correct.
Congratulations! You have now replaced the alternator belt on your 1996 Chevy Cavalier 2.2.
