Tools and Materials Needed:
- Replacement Distributor
- Distributor Cap
- Rotor
- Spark Plug Wires
- 7mm Socket
- 10mm Socket
- 13mm Socket
- Flat-head Screwdriver
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Park the Camaro on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool down.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent any accidental electrical shocks.
Step 2: Remove the Distributor Cap
- Locate the distributor cap, which is usually on the front or side of the engine near the spark plugs.
- Remove the screws or bolts that hold the distributor cap in place and carefully lift the cap off.
Step 3: Remove the Rotor and Spark Plug Wires
- Remove the rotor by pressing down on the cap's hold-down spring and lifting it off the distributor shaft.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
Step 4: Remove the Old Distributor
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the bolt holding the distributor in place.
- Gently pry up the distributor from its mounting point, taking care not to drop it.
Step 5: Install the New Distributor
- Place the new distributor into the mounting hole, ensuring it is seated correctly.
- Thread the mounting bolt back in and tighten it securely with a 10mm socket.
Step 6: Install the Rotor and Spark Plug Wires
- Reinstall the rotor by pushing it down onto the distributor shaft and securing it with the hold-down spring.
- Reattach the spark plug wires to the distributor cap, ensuring they are connected to the correct terminals.
Step 7: Install the Distributor Cap
- Position the distributor cap back in place and secure it with the screws or bolts previously removed.
Step 8: Reconnect the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal that was disconnected earlier.
Step 9: Start the Engine
- Turn the ignition key and start the Camaro.
- Check for any unusual sounds or engine behavior. Listen for smooth idling.
Step 10: Test Drive the Vehicle
- Take the Camaro for a short test drive and ensure that it runs smoothly and responds well to acceleration.
