How do you change the rear drum brakes on a Chevy Corsica?

Here is a general guide to changing the rear drum brakes on a Chevrolet Corsica:

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Set of wrenches

- Screwdriver or pry bar

- Brake fluid

- Brake drum puller (optional)

- New brake shoes and hardware kit

Steps:

1. Vehicle Preparation:

- Safely park your Corsica on a level ground and ensure the parking brake is engaged.

2. Remove Wheel Cover and Wheel:

- Using a wrench, remove the lug nuts and take off the rear wheel cover and the wheel.

3. Remove Drum Brake Cover:

- Locate the drum brake cover held by several screws.

- Use a screwdriver or a wrench to remove the screws.

- Slide the drum brake cover off to expose the brake components.

4. Remove Brake Springs:

- Locate the two brake springs at the top and bottom of the brake shoes.

- Carefully use a screwdriver to unhook and remove the springs from the brake shoes.

5. Disconnect the Brake Line:

- Disconnect the brake line connected to the wheel cylinder by gently prying it off with a pry bar.

- Be cautious as brake fluid may drip.

6. Remove Brake Shoes:

- Pull back the brake adjuster until the brake shoes are loose.

- Gently push up on the brake shoe at the bottom to remove it from the backing plate.

- Remove the top brake shoe by slightly pushing down and lifting it out.

7. Inspect the Wheel Cylinder and Backing Plate:

- Check the wheel cylinder for any signs of damage or leakage.

- If the wheel cylinder needs replacement, follow the appropriate manual for your specific vehicle.

- Inspect the backing plate for any wear or damage. Clean the backing plate if needed.

8. Install New Brake Shoes:

- Position the new brake shoes onto the backing plate.

- Start with the top shoe first, then the bottom.

- Make sure the brake linings face outward.

9. Reconnect the Brake Springs:

- Carefully hook the brake springs back into place, ensuring that they hold the brake shoes securely.

10. Adjust Brake Shoes:

- Turn the brake adjuster wheel until the brake shoes contact the brake drum.

- Continue adjusting until you feel a slight drag when spinning the drum by hand.

11. Reconnect the Brake Line:

- Reattach the brake line that was disconnected earlier, ensuring it is securely connected.

12. Install Drum Brake Cover:

- Slide the drum brake cover back into place and reattach the retaining screws.

13. Install the Wheel:

- Place the wheel back onto the hub and reinstall the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.

14. Bleed the Brakes:

- Perform a brake fluid flush and bleeding procedure as air may have entered the brake lines during disassembly.

15. Test:

- Take the Corsica for a test drive to ensure proper brake functionality.

Note:

- Always refer to your vehicle-specific repair manual for accurate instructions and safety guidelines.

- Safety precautions are essential when working on brake systems, so take appropriate measures to protect yourself and your surroundings.
