Tools and Materials Needed:
- Set of wrenches
- Screwdriver or pry bar
- Brake fluid
- Brake drum puller (optional)
- New brake shoes and hardware kit
Steps:
1. Vehicle Preparation:
- Safely park your Corsica on a level ground and ensure the parking brake is engaged.
2. Remove Wheel Cover and Wheel:
- Using a wrench, remove the lug nuts and take off the rear wheel cover and the wheel.
3. Remove Drum Brake Cover:
- Locate the drum brake cover held by several screws.
- Use a screwdriver or a wrench to remove the screws.
- Slide the drum brake cover off to expose the brake components.
4. Remove Brake Springs:
- Locate the two brake springs at the top and bottom of the brake shoes.
- Carefully use a screwdriver to unhook and remove the springs from the brake shoes.
5. Disconnect the Brake Line:
- Disconnect the brake line connected to the wheel cylinder by gently prying it off with a pry bar.
- Be cautious as brake fluid may drip.
6. Remove Brake Shoes:
- Pull back the brake adjuster until the brake shoes are loose.
- Gently push up on the brake shoe at the bottom to remove it from the backing plate.
- Remove the top brake shoe by slightly pushing down and lifting it out.
7. Inspect the Wheel Cylinder and Backing Plate:
- Check the wheel cylinder for any signs of damage or leakage.
- If the wheel cylinder needs replacement, follow the appropriate manual for your specific vehicle.
- Inspect the backing plate for any wear or damage. Clean the backing plate if needed.
8. Install New Brake Shoes:
- Position the new brake shoes onto the backing plate.
- Start with the top shoe first, then the bottom.
- Make sure the brake linings face outward.
9. Reconnect the Brake Springs:
- Carefully hook the brake springs back into place, ensuring that they hold the brake shoes securely.
10. Adjust Brake Shoes:
- Turn the brake adjuster wheel until the brake shoes contact the brake drum.
- Continue adjusting until you feel a slight drag when spinning the drum by hand.
11. Reconnect the Brake Line:
- Reattach the brake line that was disconnected earlier, ensuring it is securely connected.
12. Install Drum Brake Cover:
- Slide the drum brake cover back into place and reattach the retaining screws.
13. Install the Wheel:
- Place the wheel back onto the hub and reinstall the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
14. Bleed the Brakes:
- Perform a brake fluid flush and bleeding procedure as air may have entered the brake lines during disassembly.
15. Test:
- Take the Corsica for a test drive to ensure proper brake functionality.
