How do you change the timing belt on a 1998 Ford Contour SE?

Tools:

* 9/16" and 10mm sockets

* 1/4" drive ratchet

* 1/4" drive extension

* 1/2" drive ratchet

* 1/2" drive breaker bar

* 36mm socket

* Allen wrench

* Flat head screwdriver

* Small hammer

* Pliers

* Wire cutters

* Timing belt kit (includes new timing belt, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley)

Procedure:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the serpentine belt.

3. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

4. Remove the lower timing belt cover.

5. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets align with the timing marks on the rear camshaft cover.

6. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and pull the tensioner pulley away from the timing belt.

7. Remove the timing belt.

8. Inspect the timing belt for wear, cracks, or damage. If the timing belt is damaged, replace it.

9. Install the new timing belt, starting at the crankshaft sprocket and working your way around the pulleys.

10. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets align with the timing marks on the rear camshaft cover.

11. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt until the timing belt is tensioned properly.

12. Install the lower timing belt cover.

13. Install the upper timing belt cover.

14. Install the serpentine belt.

15. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
