Proper procedure to adjust valve lash on a 1988 Toyota 22re?

To adjust the valve lash on a 1988 Toyota 22re, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the engine is cold.

2. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

3. Remove the valve cover:

- Disconnect the coil pack wire from the distributor cap

- Remove the two 12 mm bolts that secure the coil pack to the head

- Remove the five 10mm bolts that hold down the valve cover

- Remove the valve cover gasket

4. Locate the valve lash adjustment screws. There are two screws for each cylinder, one for the intake valve and one for the exhaust valve.

5. Use a feeler gauge to measure the valve lash. The correct valve lash is 0.008 inches (0.20 mm) for both intake and exhaust valves.

6. To adjust the valve lash, loosen the locknut on the adjustment screw. Then, turn the adjustment screw in or out until the feeler gauge fits snugly between the valve stem and the rocker arm.

7. Tighten the locknut to secure the adjustment.

8. Repeat steps 5-7 for the remaining valves.

9. Replace the valve cover gasket.

10. Reinstall the valve cover.

11. Reconnect the coil pack wire to the distributor cap.

12. Reinstall the two 12 mm bolts that secure the coil pack to the head.

13. Reinstall the five 10mm bolts that hold down the valve cover.

14. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

Start the engine and check for proper operation.
