How do you replace the water pump on a 1996 Chevy Cavalier?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement water pump

- Gasket

- Bolts

- Belt tensioner

- Antifreeze

- Funnel

- Wrench set

- Screwdriver

- Pliers

- Jack and jack stands

Step 1:

Safety first: Put on safety glasses and park your car in a well-lit area, engaging the parking brake and turning off the engine.

Step 2: Drain the Coolant

Locate the radiator drain plug and place a catch pan underneath.

Loosen the plug with a wrench and let the coolant drain into the pan.

Step 3: Remove the Belt

Using the wrench, loosen the bolt holding the belt tensioner in place.

Slide the tensioner to release the tension on the belt and remove it.

Step 4: Disconnect the Radiator Hose

Clamp the upper radiator hose with pliers to prevent coolant from spilling.

Carefully remove the hose from the water pump.

Step 5: Disconnect Thermostat Assembly

Locate the thermostat housing and disconnect it by removing the bolts.

Be cautious as some coolant might flow out.

Step 6: Remove the Old Water Pump

Take out the old gasket and any remnants from the surface.

Remove the bolts holding the water pump in place and carefully pry it off.

Step 7: Check the Gasket Surface

Make sure the gasket surface is clean and free of any debris.

Step 8: Install the New Gasket

Apply some sealant to the new gasket and place it on the mounting surface.

Step 9: Install the New Water Pump

Place the new water pump onto the gasket and secure it with the bolts.

Step 10: Reconnect Thermostat Components

Reinstall the thermostat housing, ensuring the gasket is properly seated.

Reconnect the radiator hose and make sure it's secure.

Step 11: Replace Drive Belt

Loop the drive belt around the pulleys and ensure proper tension.

Step 12: Refill Coolant

Add a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water into the radiator until full.

Replace the radiator cap and check for leaks.

Step 13: Start the Engine

Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

Check the coolant level again and top it off if necessary.

Step 14: Test Drive the Car

Go for a short drive to check for any issues.

Monitor the temperature gauge to ensure it's within the normal range.

Step 15: Verify for Leaks

Inspect the area around the water pump for any signs of leaks.

Step 16: Clean Up

Dispose of any used coolant properly and clean up any spills.
