How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1997 Cadillac Catera?

Tools and Materials:

- New Thermostat (OEM or high-quality aftermarket)

- Replacement Gasket (if needed)

- 5/8-inch (16mm) socket

- 3/8-inch (10mm) socket

- Phillips screwdriver

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Pliers

- Coolant (same type as currently used in the vehicle)

- Funnel

- Rags

- Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow it to cool down completely.

2. Open the hood of your Cadillac Catera.

3. Locate the thermostat housing. It's usually found near the top of the engine, on the driver's side.

4. Remove the coolant reservoir cap to release pressure from the cooling system.

5. Use a 5/8-inch (16mm) socket and ratchet to loosen the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place.

6. Once the bolts are loosened, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the thermostat housing off. Be careful not to spill any coolant.

7. Remove the old thermostat and gasket from the housing. Inspect the gasket for damage or deterioration and replace it if necessary.

8. Install the new thermostat, ensuring it's properly seated in the housing.

9. Replace the gasket (if needed) and the thermostat housing. Tighten the bolts securely with the 5/8-inch (16mm) socket and ratchet.

10. Refill the coolant reservoir with the appropriate coolant. Use a funnel to avoid spills.

11. Close the hood of your vehicle and start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes to circulate the coolant.

12. Check the coolant level again and add more if necessary.

13. Test the thermostat by driving the vehicle and observing the temperature gauge. The temperature should remain within the normal operating range.
