How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1988 Mazda 626 4 cylinder automatic?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- New Thermostat (OEM or equivalent)

- Coolant (check owner’s manual for correct type and amount)

- Container to catch drained coolant

- Funnel

- Wrench set

- Pliers

- Screwdriver

- Rags

- Safety goggles

Instructions:

1. Park your car on a level surface and allow it to cool down completely. If the engine is still warm, the coolant may be scalding hot and cause burns.

2. Locate the thermostat housing. On the 1988 Mazda 626 4-cylinder automatic, the thermostat housing is located on the front of the engine, just below the upper radiator hose.

3. Place a container under the thermostat housing to catch the draining coolant.

4. Loosen the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place and carefully remove the housing. Be careful not to drop any bolts into the engine compartment.

5. Remove the old thermostat from the housing. Be aware that the old thermostat may be stuck to the housing, so you may need to pry it off gently with a screwdriver.

6. Clean the thermostat housing and the gasket surface on the engine block. Make sure there is no dirt, debris, or old gasket material that could prevent a proper seal.

7. Install the new thermostat in the housing. Ensure the thermostat is correctly positioned with the jiggle valve at the top.

8. Replace the thermostat housing gasket and reinstall the housing. Tighten the bolts securely but do not overtighten.

9. Fill the radiator with coolant. Use a funnel to add coolant slowly, checking the overflow reservoir regularly to ensure proper filling.

10. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the coolant. Check for any leaks around the thermostat housing.

11. Turn the engine off and let it cool down again. Recheck the coolant level and add more if necessary.

Remember to dispose of the old coolant properly and follow any safety precautions listed in your vehicle's owner's manual.
