How do you remove the timing belt gears on a dual cam 1999 Ford Contour 2.0L?

To remove the timing belt gears on a dual cam 1999 Ford Contour 2.0L, you will need the following tools:

- 10mm socket

- 13mm socket

- 15mm socket

- 17mm socket

- Breaker bar

- Torque wrench

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Pliers

- Timing belt wrench

1. Disconnect the battery. This is a safety precaution to prevent the engine from starting while you are working on it.

2. Remove the serpentine belt. The serpentine belt is located on the front of the engine and is driven by the crankshaft. To remove it, loosen the tensioner pulley bolt with a 13mm socket and pry the belt off of the pulleys with a flat-head screwdriver.

3. Remove the timing belt covers. There are two timing belt covers, one on the front of the engine and one on the back. To remove them, use a 10mm socket to remove the bolts that hold them in place.

4. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC). This is done by aligning the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. To do this, use a 17mm socket to turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket aligns with the pointer on the oil pump. Then, use a 13mm socket to turn the camshaft sprocket counterclockwise until the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the pointer on the cylinder head.

5. Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley bolt. The timing belt tensioner pulley is located on the back of the engine. To loosen it, use a 15mm socket to turn the bolt counterclockwise.

6. Remove the timing belt. Use a timing belt wrench to remove the timing belt from the sprockets.

7. Remove the timing belt gears. The timing belt gears are located on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. To remove them, use a 17mm socket to loosen the bolts that hold them in place. Then, use a puller to remove the gears.

To reinstall the timing belt gears:

1. Install the timing belt gears. Use a puller to install the timing belt gears onto the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.

2. Tighten the timing belt gear bolts. Tighten the timing belt gear bolts to the specified torque using a torque wrench.

3. Install the timing belt. Use a timing belt wrench to install the timing belt onto the sprockets.

4. Tension the timing belt. Use a timing belt tension gauge to tension the timing belt to the specified tension.

5. Tighten the timing belt tensioner pulley bolt. Tighten the timing belt tensioner pulley bolt to the specified torque using a torque wrench.

6. Reinstall the timing belt covers. Reinstall the timing belt covers and the bolts that hold them in place.

7. Reinstall the serpentine belt. Reinstall the serpentine belt and the tensioner pulley bolt.

8. Reconnect the battery. Reconnect the battery to the vehicle.
