Tools and materials:
Socket set
Wrench set
Screwdriver set
Oil pan
Oil drain plug wrench
New valve seals
Gasket maker
Instructions:
1. Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Turn off the engine and let it cool down.
3. Open the hood and locate the valve covers.
4. Remove the valve covers using a wrench or socket.
5. Look at the valve seals. If they’re cracked, brittle or damaged, they need to be replaced.
6. Remove the old valve seals with a screwdriver or pry bar. Be careful not to damage the valve stems.
7. Clean the valve stems with a wire brush or solvent.
8. Apply a thin layer of gasket maker to the new valve seals.
9. Install the new valve seals onto the valve stems. Make sure they’re seated properly.
10. Reinstall the valve covers.
11. Tighten the valve cover bolts to the specified torque.
12. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
13. Check for oil leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the valve cover bolts until the leaks stop.
If the leaks persist, you may have to use a different gasket maker, and reinstall the valve covers.
Tips:
1. If you’re not comfortable working on your own engine, take it to a mechanic to have the valve seals replaced.
2. Be careful not to drop the new valve seals into the engine. If you do, you’ll have to remove the oil pan to get them out.
