- New ignition switch assembly
Instructions:
1. Disconnect Battery:
- Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Disconnect the battery by removing the negative terminal using the appropriate wrench. This step is crucial to ensure that no electrical current flows during the repair process.
2. Remove Steering Column Covers:
- Use a flathead screwdriver or pry tool to gently pry off the plastic steering column covers. There may be two covers – one on the upper part and one on the lower part.
3. Locate Ignition Lock Cylinder:
- Once the covers are removed, you should see the ignition lock cylinder. It is usually located in the middle section of the steering column.
4. Remove the Ignition Switch:
- Insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn it to the "ON" position. This will allow the cylinder to move freely.
- Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the two screws that secure the ignition switch assembly.
- Gently pry the ignition switch out from its housing.
5. Disconnect Electrical Connectors:
- Disconnect any electrical connectors attached to the ignition switch assembly. Make note of any wire positions or color-coding to ensure proper reconnection during installation.
6. Install New Ignition Switch:
- Place the new ignition switch assembly into the housing and reconnect any electrical connectors you disconnected earlier.
- Secure the ignition switch with the previously removed screws.
7. Reconnect Battery:
- Connect the negative battery terminal back to the battery. Tighten the terminal securely.
8. Test Ignition:
- Turn the key in the ignition to check if the switch is working properly. The engine should now start normally.
9. Reinstall Covers:
- Reattach the steering column covers that were removed earlier, ensuring that they are properly aligned and secured.
10. Verify Functionality:
- Test the ignition switch by starting the car several times to ensure it is working reliably.
